Christian Ecology Link Meets Brown Over Opposition to Nuclear Power Plants - ChristianToday.com - 10 Jan 08
"Three representatives of Christian Ecology Link (CEL) met Prime Minister Gordon Brown today to present him with a solar powered torch and a sample of insulation material as symbols of their resistance to the new generation of nuclear power plants that were given the green light by Government today. Both objects were intended to demonstrate the energy that can be generated by the sun, wind and waves, and highlight the need for a 'drastic reduction' in the use of energy.
Ruth Jarman, Eleanor Orr and Jonathan Essex also handed the Prime Minister a letter outlining their requests for a non-nuclear future and a copy of CEL’s Faith and Power report during their lunchtime visit. In the report, CEL advocates for energy reduction and investment in renewable energy forms as an alternative to new nuclear power stations in the generation of energy."

Date: 2008-01-11 03:42 pm (UTC)I was impressed that a team of these anti-nuke Christian folks could get an audience with Brown on the day of his re-start of the nuclear re-animation. They must not be complete nobodies.
I guess that's supposed to mean that he's listening after all. Maybe these folks were considered "mostly harmless" by comparison with bringing over the head of Greenpeace for tea and crumpets.
(Do people still have tea and crumpets? What is a crumpet anyhow?)

Date: 2008-01-12 06:19 am (UTC)I think it's a chain reaction: from the urge to get away from the sinful city to the country, to trying to live a more simple and rustic life, to realizing that, hey, simple and rustic doesn't work so well when the creek's clogged with plastic bags and water table's contaminated and so on. Just a theory.
I still have tea. :) No crumpets, though. I don't know what they are, but it sounds too much like 'limpet'.
