What Was Your Saturday Night Like?
Jan. 27th, 2008 07:39 amWith a little prodding from
dsmoen I can report the following on Saturday night.
Decided to head out late afternoon for B&N to pick up a reserved copy of Corel Painter (tm) Official Magazine from the more distant of the two stores in our humble hamlet. I called in advance and had them hold the last copy. They'll hold things for a day and so I figured I had plenty of time to get there.
Also had to get a new burner bowl for the stove. Went to the local Ace hardware and picked up one that looked like it would do the trick. As it turns out, it had a slight size problem so I'll be going to Sears today to see if they have something that's close in price for their stove (it's a Kenmore). Maybe it will fit better. Tension mounts.
So I head over to the shiny new mega-mall to pick up my magazine and the place is packed. The weather had turned nice and I guess all that pent up cash folks were building up during the frozen tundra days needed release. But I did find a parking spot at last (although I'm not sure if I cut someone who thought that spot was going to be for them - I was clearly there first either way) and moseyed up to the store.
On the way up, I ran into my old college housemate, G.. While I'd had some contact with him just prior to returning to Lincolnland, I'd not stayed in touch nor vice versa. He was in the middle of moving and new marriage and such so he had fish to fry as did I. So he invited me to join them at the movie they were going to and I agreed to do so. Especially since he offered to treat.
It was the Jack Nickelson and Morgan Freeman dying buddy film, "The Bucket List". The basic story (without too many spoilers) is about two guys, one obscenely rich and the other an auto mechanic, getting stuck in a hospital room together. One develops a "bucket list" of things to do before you die and together they go about checking things off the list. There is more to it than that but that's the general premise. Lots of laughs involved. I mentioned to my friend that we should write up a list but there was the little problem of neither one of us being obscenely wealthy that we'd have to work on. Reminded me a bit of how implausible the Jack Nickelson and Helen Hunt romance was some time back in another film. Enter need for top 1% strata money again.
Afterward I quickly zoomed over to the neighboring B&N store, got the magazine, and the whole crew of the seven of us headed off to a Chinese restaurant I'd never been to before. There we caught up on old times and developed some new times. This included the three folks who were largely new to my acquaintance.
It was mostly a liberal Democrat crew with more than a few state employees so much heated political discussion ensued. What's the matter with Bill and Hillary, Reagan was the second worst president ever, if only they'd done what we said in the late 1970s, yada yada. One of the folks was an IT person so we talked a bit of shop on webpage development and such. It was all good fun.
We had a lovely bottle or two of white wine to go with the meal, plates were rotated and we shared the ordered bounty (I ordered the three spice green beans but tossed in a bit of pineapple and tofu from other orders - it was all fairly good) and I got a bit of a buzz off my two glasses of wine. I'm a bit out of practice in that department. The solitary hermit thing can do that.
Again my friend G. bought which was awfully nice of him. I'll catch up on that debt of gratitude later this week when we meet for lunch downtown.
The apartment is down to an almost, but not quite, undetectable level of stink. Today the temps are supposed to be in the 50s so maybe a bit more venting will finish that toxic waste disposal project off.
So what was your Saturday night like? Post something in your LJ if you're up to it.
