This is kind of cool. Only missed it by eight years.

Integration From the Top Down: Speculations on the Ultimate Color Line - Esquire Magazine - Dec 58

"What manner of man will this be, this possible Negro Presidential candidate of 2000? Undoubtedly, he will be well-educated. He will be well-traveled and have a keen grasp of his country's role in the world and its relationships. He will be a dedicated internationalist with working comprehension of the intricacies of foreign aid, technical assistance and reciprocal trade.

He may well be a diplomat who has earned the respect of people everywhere for his skill, insight and knowledge. He could be a scientist or engineer or statesman. He could be the man who led the fight in the UN that led to crushing the aggression of a mythical 1975.

Assuredly, though, despite his other characteristics, he will have developed the fortitude to withstand the vicious smear attacks that came his way as he fought to the top in government and politics. While we can expect and end to racial and religious discrimination by 2000, the transformation will not be easy and those in the vanguard may not expect to be the targets for scurrilous attacks, as the hate mongers, in their last-ditch efforts, spew their verbal and written poison."

When I was volunteering at the New Alchemy Institute [1] [2] [3] back in the late 1970s and early 1980s, one of the young fellows doing research there was one Bruce Fulford.  His project involved putting mass quantities of compost in solar greenhouses.

Why would one do this?  Two reasons: added CO2 (which plants eat) and extra heat (a good thing even in Cape Cod winters).  The photo on the link below shows one version of Bruce's project.  When I was there, he'd developed a little "train" of compost bins on wheels that he could load into one side of the greenhouse and then as the composting went on would take out on the other side as the composting process finished up.  I'm not sure how well this worked out.

Solar Sunspaces and Greenhouses - Build-It-Solar (Lot of cool solar stuff on this site!)

With my newfound addiction to social networking systems, I've been tracking down some of my old friends from that by-gone (but returning) era.  I see that Bruce has continued with his activities and here are a couple of articles on that.  The last one on his 10-year-old son's activities is particularly fun, imo.
