Never Read the Man...
Apr. 14th, 2007 09:28 am[UPDATED] Never read his books but still have some on the shelf I picked up free or cheap for "when I get time". Occasionally I'd read an essay, or rant, in one of the lefty political publications like In These Times. ["The End is Near"] [["Cold Turkey"] Never overly impressed with those.
Actually, as I re-read them, I'm thinking "The End is Near" was what didn't work for me (much as I agreed with the sentiments). The "Cold Turkey" essay is spot on [see quotes below] and makes me wish that I'd written him a note. Maybe I'll just include some of his thoughts in an essay. It's a poor substitute, but the bus has left.
For some reason, the most vocal Christians among us never mention the Beatitudes. But, often with tears in their eyes, they demand that the Ten Commandments be posted in public buildings. And of course that’s Moses, not Jesus. I haven’t heard one of them demand that the Sermon on the Mount, the Beatitudes, be posted anywhere. - Kurt Vonnegut
One of the few good things about modern times: If you die horribly on television, you will not have died in vain. You will have entertained us. - Kurt Vonnegut
And do you know why I think he is so pissed off at Arabs? They invented algebra. - Kurt Vonnegut
At any rate, started on THE SIRENS OF TITAN the other night. We'll see.
