Safety Rating for Nation's Biggest Nuclear Plant Lowered - CNN (22 Feb 2007)

"The Nuclear Regulatory Commission on Thursday downgraded the safety rating of the nation's largest nuclear plant, subjecting it to more inspectors and a level of scrutiny shared by just one other plant in the nation. The NRC made the announcement following three years of problems in various safety systems at the Palo Verde nuclear plant west of Phoenix.

Inspectors in September found that one of its emergency diesel generators had been broken for 18 days. Emergency generators are critically important at nuclear reactors, providing electricity to pumps, valves and control rooms if the main electrical supply fails."

Israel Plans to Build Nuclear Power Plant, Official Says - Israel Money, Ynetnews (12 Feb 07)

"Israel has already designated an area in the south of the country near Shivta, not far from the Egyptian border, for the purpose of constructing the plant. The publication of Israel's plan in the area several years ago roused anger in Egypt, which claimed that an accident in the place might severely affect it. However, the situation has changed since, and in recent months both Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Jordan's King Abdullah spoke of the possibility of building nuclear power plants in their countries.

"Iran's controversial nuclear program, which it says is for peaceful purposes but the U.S. accuses it of secretly developing atomic weapons, has prompted Egypt, Jordan and the Gulf Arab states to express interest in creating their own peaceful programs. Some warn that the flurry of nuclear program ambitions could lead to a dangerous proliferation of nuclear technology — or even weapons — in the volatile region.
