Again, the gift just keeps on giving. I wonder how much this is going to add to the cost over-runs that Areva is going to have to eat for lunch.

3-year Delay Expected at Finnish Nuclear Plant - IHT - 17 Oct 08

"The completion of Europe's first pressurized nuclear reactor will be further delayed by three years and is not expected to be online until 2012, Finnish energy officials said Friday. The postponement was announced by French-German supplier Areva-Siemens, which did not give a reason except to say that 'civil construction works will take several months longer than earlier estimated,' the TVO utility said.

It was the fourth delay at the site in Olkiluoto, which has been plagued by faulty materials and planning problems since construction began in 2005. The 1,600-megawatt plant was to be online in 2009."

Yes, let's put the slightly sea water corroded turbine rotors into the mission critical nuke. Such fun. :)

Turbines May Be Salvageable - Times and Transcript - 17 Oct 08

"The company that built the turbines that are currently resting at the bottom of Saint John Harbour can't say yet if the multimillion-dollar units are beyond repair. On Wednesday, a truck and the turbine units it was carrying slipped off a barge that became top heavy as it was being loaded and en route to the Point Lepreau nuclear generating station.

The units were built by Siemens Electric Canada Ltd. 'We are not able to disclose the value, but they are in the millions,' said Dirk Miller, vice-president corporate communications with Siemens Electric Canada Ltd.

'We are still investigating possible damage and, you know, it's quite a difficult environment there, but salt water is for sure not the best environment for metals.' Each of the turbines that were on the barge weighs a staggering 107 tonnes."
