Hunkered Down Day

Didn't even get outside today. All day was spent putting together the new computer system, uninstalling and installing software and providing the tweaks needed to be the system I want it to be. The hardware part went well. The new monitor took to the new CPU unit with no problems. The big 22 inch screen is different but I'm happy with it.

Biggest fail of the day was with the microphone sound. Sometimes I think Microsoft stole code from Linux on that one. Heck, even Linux isn't that bad these days. I kind of sorta got it to work but then got frustrated with it and moved on to the next task.

I have some on-line references to dig around in and perhaps that will do it. At first it seemed like a simple mute checkbox configuration problem but there seems to be a bit more to it. We'll see later.

Have most of the basic stuff installed and the major commercial stuff is in the wings. Hopefully there will be no license juggling problems as I move most of those from my inadequate-to-the-task laptop and over to the new desktop.

Did find an interesting site for free software for Windows XP and I'm experimenting with some of their suggestions. It's cleverly called "Reinstall Windows and Outfit Your System With All Freeware Programs". So far not too bad a selection. :)
