An attempt to be fair and balanced by the WSJ. Some of the knocks on the opponent's views are a bit off (like the "lack of experience" item on economics, it hasn't seemed to work to get rid if the "temporary" Price-Anderson Act) but he gets the final punchline right.
The Case For and Against Nuclear Power - WSJ - 30 Jun 08
"If nuclear power really were able to make a big dent in greenhouse emissions, then it would be worth the time and resources necessary to address all these problems. Instead, though, the magnitude of these difficulties will keep any nuclear renaissance too small to make a difference, and will require expensive government support just to achieve modest gains. Those resources are better spent elsewhere."In the meanwhile, the dodgy performance of Japanese nuclear power seems to be ignored by McCain and other new nukes promoters. And they knock wind and solar for being intermittent sources of energy!
Japan Nuclear Plant Usage Rises to 53.6 Pct in June - Reuters - 01 Jul 08
"Japan's nuclear power plants cranked up use in June to meet peak summer demand, but remained lower year-on-year due to a major plant closure, government data showed on Tuesday. The utilisation rate at Japan's 10 nuclear power companies rose to an average 53.6 percent in June from 51.1 percent in May, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) said."
"Due to TEPCO's nuclear plant shutdown, Japan derived only about 26 percent of its electricity from nuclear power plants in the year ended in March 2008, down from 30 percent a year earlier."
