Movie Night
Jun. 22nd, 2008 03:56 pmLast night I decided to pick up two DVDs at the neighborhood Redbox kiosk. Was planning on using one of the freebie codes (BREAKROOM) but there was a line and I kind of rushed the process and thus missed the first step of entering the code. Oh, well. It's only a buck a film. After a bit of menuing around, I found two that I'd wanted to see and feared might not be on the system for much longer. "Juno" and "Martian Child".
Of course everyone and their dog has heard of the Academy award winning "Juno" and quite a bit about the colorful screenwriter, Diablo Cody. What got me about it was the language which was very much a clone of my non-bio-kid, including much of the humor. Kind of a hip Midwestern mode of discourse. I liked it.
My motivations for watching the less noted "Martian Child" was a bit different. Many years ago on Compuserve, I used to be a regular on SF writer David Gerrold's forum. This was when he was going through much of the adoption processes which provided the inspiration for the resulting story, and now movie. Since the reviews were not that great, I had lowered expectations but it turned out to be a very nice film and I also enjoyed it. This is one might expect to be showing up on the cable movie circuit in the not too distant future.
