For all the talk of Rush Limbaugh and the other reich-wing talking heads of today, the real American pioneer in this televised field of political infotainment was a fellow named Joe Pyne.

There are nifty snippets of his show on YouTube.  Gives quite a look back into those times.  Attitudes, styles, etc..  It was a very interesting show for me as a youngster who was interested in watching something other than Johnny Carson on late night television.  For instance, I first heard of W.E.B. DuBois on Joe Pyne's show.  Albeit not in a good way.  :)

I'm listing one whole show from 1966 featuring a young fellow, Stanley Kohls, who was the secretary of the War Resister's League, as the target-guest.  Most folks were still pretty much for the Vietnam War in 1966 and the questions from the crowd reflect that.

Interesting to compare and contrast with how the national media dealt with war protesters during the Iraq War.  This interview would not likely have happened, imo.  After all, Phil Donahue's MSNBC show got canned just before the latest Iraq war started and Bill Moyer's bowed out of NOW until the war was sufficiently unpopular to allow contrary opinion to show up again.  Of course he's doing his Bill Moyer's Journal again on PBS.

Another interesting episode from the Joe Pyne Show.  As noted in the comments, Helene Gurley Brown is still around, whereas Joe Pyne is long gone, so maybe there's something to that naked apartment dancing biz. Long before "Sex in the City" there was Ms. Brown's "Sex and the Single Girl" (1962).
