Fed: Safety at Palo Verde Declined - Arizona Republic - 20 Dec 07

"Federal regulators listed numerous concerns in a review of operations at the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station, saying the plant's performance on safety has declined and the margin of safety at the plant has narrowed.  Regulators said that the problems don't pose a threat to the public but that the plant's operators need to make significant changes.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has ramped up oversight at the plant since March, spending 8,500 hours on the project. At a meeting at Palo Verde on Wednesday night, the commission said it found 37 'more than minor' performance deficiencies affecting operations."

Looks like Richardson has backtracked since his anti-nuke turn in the Nevada debates to an earlier position.  Thompson seems pretty skilled at not answering questions.  Like when he turned on the moderator at the Des Moines Register debate for doing the job he and other candidates on the stage had agreed she should do.  Another profile in courage there.  Edwards and Kucinich the only absolutely no new nukes candidates.

The Candidates on Nuclear Power - SF Bay Guardian Blog - 18 Dec 07

"Insight, the Nuclear Energy Institute's monthly pro-nukes pamphleteer, did a survey of the presidential candidates positions on nuclear power. The only one that's explicitly against more nuclear power plants is John Edwards. Fred Thompson managed to answer the question without really answering the question. They panned Dennis Kucinich, but for the record, in an interview with Grist’s Amanda Griscom Little, he said, 'Nuclear has to be phased out. The hidden costs of nuclear are enormous -- of building these plants and storing the waste forever. It's not financially or environmentally sustainable.'"

No big deal but we'll fire the big boss man, just for the heck of it, just the same.

Faults in Nuclear Plants Recharge Power Controversy - Deutsche Welle - 21 Dec 07

"Minor structural faults were reported on Thursday, Dec. 20, at two nuclear power plants in Germany. The incidents come on the heels of a scandal involving a pair of other plants accused of covering up defects."

"This summer, the sector received a jolt when a fire and a short circuit forced two nuclear power plants near Hamburg to shut down. The plant's joint operators, E.ON and Vattenfall, were accused of concealing structural defects in the plants.  Though the claim was denied, Vattenfall's European chief stepped down as a result of the incident."
