Nuclear Plant Safety Faulted After NRC Waiver - Newsday - 14 Dec 07
"The Indian Point 3 nuclear plant has received a waiver from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to continue using material that protects critical electronic cables from fire for just 24 minutes instead of the one hour normally required, a spokesman for the NRC confirmed.
The safety standard in place at all but one other nuclear plant in the nation calls for the cable wraps to contain a fire in a tunnel for at least 60 minutes to allow enough time for a fire to be detected, identified and extinguished before it can spread to more electronic cables. A cable fire in 1975 in Alabama caused what was then the nation's worst nuclear accident."
