It wasn't that long ago and all the pro-nuke folks were pointing to Japan as being the showcase for nuclear safety and reliability.  Then stuff happened and other things that were buried got exposed.  News following the nuclear leak resulting from the recent earthquake.

"Three and a half years later Tepco, Tokyo's electricity provider, had to shut down all 17 of its reactors after admitting it falsified its inspection reports.  And Japan's worst accident at a nuclear facility took place at Mihama, on the west coast, in March 2004, when five workers were killed by scalding steam from a corroded pipe. The pipe had not been inspected for eight years.  After every incident Japan's nuclear operators have promised to improve safety procedures, but only this year all 12 power companies admitted to thousands of irregularities in reporting past problems. "

"The Associated Press is reporting that the world's most powerful nuclear reactor caught fire and leaked 325 gallons of radioactive wastewater into the Sea of Japan today after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake in the northwestern part of Japan."

Japan PM Criticises Nuclear Industry After Leak - ABC News (Australia)

"Mr Abe has criticised the owner of the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant, saying the company's response to Monday's earthquake was too late.  A fire broke out at the plant as a result of the quake, and the company has subsequently revealed that radioactive water and gas were discharged, and drums containing low-level waste fell over and spilled."
