Latest Used Movie Selections
Jun. 11th, 2007 06:02 amOn the every-other-Sunday run to see the folks, I dropped by the neighborhood Blockbuster to see what they had to offer this time around. Ended up going for 6 of the higher end (newer) 3 for $20 pile. Here are the resulting picks.
Blood Diamond
Children of Men
The Last King of Scotland
Pirates of the Carribean 2 - Dead Man's Chest
Casino Royale
The Prestige
I was tempted by The Illusionist but decided to pass on it and go with Christopher Priest's The Prestige. Also keep being tempted by Borat but can't bring myself to actually buying the damned thing. Part of that is that it seems like I saw a large chunk of it on cable when it first came out. Someone came up with the idea of running a lengthy section of the film (like a half-hour or so) as a promotional spot. In hindsight, that seems like a very sharp move.
The other film that was tempting was the latest Clint Eastwood war film, Flags of Our Fathers. Frankly, I'm more interested in the unique Letters from Iwo Jima which is told from the Japanese perspective but both are supposed to be pretty good films.
The Last King of Scotland got the last spot this time. I had Indian (as from India) neighbors who were ethnic refugees from Idi Amin's Uganda so that story has a special interest to me. Also I had a wonderful Ugandan graduate school friend who still hasn't returned some of the lefty literature I lent him. No big deal. I just hope he didn't take it too seriously. He was also a threat on the soccer field. A mountain of a man. I remember one collision with him in front of my goal. Talk about the Clash of the Titans. I still hurt from that one.
Forrest Whitaker is supposed to be excellent in his portrayal (he got the Oscar) of Amin. I like all of his work I've seen to date so this isn't surprising. Clint Eastwood's remembrance of jazz great Charlie Parker, Bird, was a particularly memorable one.
