Way Ahead of the Curve

From the very excellent "The Life and Death of Petra Kelly" by Sara Parkin. The year was 1990.

"The [German Green] party had decided to make global warming the central theme of the campaign.

Unsurprisingly, at the end of one of the most astonishing years in German history - a year which had seen free elections in East Germany; Chancellor Kohl's 'purchase' of East Germany from Gorbachev for $8 billion; the end of the post World War Two division; and the first joint meeting of the two German parliaments in Berlin's Reichstag - Die Gruenen's sudden concern about global ecological problems fooled no one.

The policies were not wrong, but the moment was. All but the most loyal voters deserted the Greens. Die Gruenen failed to win any seats with 4.9 per cent of the vote in the West, while Buendnis 90/Die Gruenen won eight seats with 6.1 per cent in the East."
