Atomic Films and Amy

From one of my favorite public radio programs back in SLO. KCBX's Take Two: The Movie Show.

"May 1, 2006: 'Atomic' On the 20th annniversary of the disaster at Chernobyl, Jim and Bob discuss atomic films" [mp3, 24.7 MB]

Amy Goodman from Democracy Now! also recently spoke in SLO County and KCBX filed it as an MP3 for posterity.

"November 12, 2006: Amy Goodman's speech at the San Luis Obispo Vet's Hall" [mp3]

And still speaking of atomic films, here's a classic "Atoms for Peace" clip from the mid-1940s recently noted on YouTube. Click here for the link to the original YouTube page.

Radioactive Tunes

RADAR: Radiation-Related Music Page

The "Winter Wonderland" inspired tune, "Workin' at the Nuclear Power Plant" is pretty good.

They seem to have missed the classic John and Johanna Hall tune, "Plutonium Is Forever" from the "No Nukes" album.

Soon to be U.S. Representative John Hall that is....

The Smith-Putnam Wind Turbine in Action (Early 1940s)

The world's first megawatt sized turbine in action outside of Rutland, Vermont. Unlike with nuclear power plants, all of the funding for this project was done the old fashioned way. With private funds.

After the Smith Company decided not to continue the project, they put out a book outlining the development of the book in anticipation that someone might be interested in picking up where they left off at some point in the future. This classic book is called "Power from the Wind" by Palmer Cosslett Putnam.

Paul Gipe has a collection of Smith-Putnam photos he received from one of the folks involved in the project, Carl Wilcox.
